Loyola forfeits game over bad field conditions

Officials ruled Manhattan College a winner by forfeit over Loyola yesterday when Greyhounds men's soccer coach Bill Sento decided not to play the game because of hazardous field conditions in Riverdale, N.Y.

Loyola (8-2-2, 4-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) is ranked 24th in the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America coaches' poll.

* Navy 4, UMBC 2: Sophomore Shawn Moyer (North County) scored two first-half goals and assisted on another as Navy (5-3-1) defeated depleted UMBC (5-5-1) at UMBC Stadium. Because of injuries and one-game suspensions, the Retrievers played without six players who were starters to open the season.

* George Mason 2, Maryland 1: Sophomore forward Jenn Gross scored an unassisted goal with four minutes remaining in the first half to lead No. 11 George Mason (9-1-1) over host Maryland. The Terps (4-5-2) had tied the game when Randi Goldblatt scored at the 34:10 mark, but Gross put the Patriots ahead seven minutes later.

* Delaware 2, UMBC 0: Sophomore Beth Hatt and senior Kristy Hendrickson each scored first-half goals, leading visiting Delaware (9-1-1) to a nonleague triumph over UMBC (7-3).
