The Washington Redskins, trying to pep up their running game, re-signed running back Cedric Smith yesterday and waived defensive lineman Shane Collins.
Smith played in the team's first three games and caught a 1-yard touchdown pass against the New Orleans Saints, but was waived Sept. 20.
Collins, a second-round draft pick out of Arizona State in 1992 who has been plagued by injuries during his three-year career, could return to the team later.
His departure leaves the Redskins with just five players remaining from general manager Charley Casserly's first three drafts from 1990-1992.
Casserly said the team wanted to bring back Smith, and because it had nine healthy defensive linemen, Collins had to go.
