Police chief Lt. Col. Michel Francois left Haiti for the Dominican Republic and exile.

FRAPH leader Emmanuel Constant told the group's members to lay down their weapons and work as a "constructive opposition" to returning President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

Father Aristide, ending speculation on the date of his return, told the United Nations he will be back in Haiti October 15.

Israel's Supreme Court gave the go-ahead for 30 police officers to join the multinational peacekeeping force in Haiti.

The PORT-AU-PRINCE airport will reopen to commercial traffic by this morning, the Pentagon said.

President Clinton will fly to the naval air station at Norfolk, Va., tomorrow for a briefing on Haiti and to meet with sailors from the aircraft carrier, USS Eisenhower, and their families.
