Petty, Andretti say enough already

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The pairing of legendary NASCAR champion-turned-team owner Richard Petty and driver John Andretti for 1995, a Winston Cup Series deal that seemed so certain just a week ago, isn't going to happen.

"It's gone," Dale Inman, Petty Enterprises team manager, said. "The thing fell through all at once."

However, Andretti will be in the No. 43 Pontiac tomorrow when qualifying begins at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Mello Yello 500 on Sunday.

"John will drive Charlotte for us," said Inman. "We've got a brand-new car for that race, and he was in the shop this morning to get the seat fitted and the mirror adjusted.

"He could even be with us the three races remaining this season after Charlotte, at Rockingham, Phoenix and Atlanta. We just don't know about that yet. But he won't be with us in '95."

Rumors swirled that Andretti will join the new Kranefuss-Haas Team that plans to field Fords out of a Mooresville shop next season.
