School unions endorse Orenstein for county post

The unions representing Carroll County teachers and other school employees have endorsed Democratic candidate Rebecca A. Orenstein for a county commissioner seat in the Nov. 8 general election.

Ms. Orenstein, a Westminster city councilwoman, replaces Republican David T. Duree on the unions' endorsement list. Mr. Duree of New Windsor lost in the Sept. 13 primary.

The Carroll County Education Association and Carroll Association of School Employees, which have about 1,600 members, also endorsed incumbents Donald I. Dell, a Westminster Republican, and Elmer C. Lippy, a Manchester Democrat. Both won in the primary.

Six candidates, three from each party, are vying for three commissioner seats. The other candidates are Republicans W. Benjamin Brown and Richard T. Yates and Democrat Grover N. "Sam" Sensabaugh.

The unions did not make any other changes in their original endorsements, which were announced in July, said Jim Torretti, a South Carroll High School math teacher who co-chaired a candidate interviewing committee.
