Rodgers to interview with Orioles today

Former California Angels manager Buck Rodgers will interview for the Orioles' managing vacancy today.

Rodgers will be the sixth candidate interviewed, following Rick Dempsey, Davey Lopes, Bill Virdon, Phil Regan and Elrod Hendricks.

As of early last night, Orioles general manager Roland Hemond said he still had not set up an interview with Cincinnati Reds manager Davey Johnson, who has been granted permission to speak to the Orioles about the vacancy created when Johnny Oates was fired last Monday.

St. Louis Cardinals hitting instructor Chris Chambliss today will interview for the Kansas City Royals' managing job, then will interview with the Orioles, perhaps as soon as tomorrow.

Rodgers, 56, was fired by the Angels after managing them to a 16-23 start in 1994.

During parts of 13 seasons as a major-league manager with the Milwaukee Brewers, Montreal Expos and Angels, Rodgers was 784-755.

National League Manager of the Year in 1987, Rodgers has a reputation for being among the best in the game at handling a pitching staff.
