* After more than 100 years in the canning business, the B. F. Shriver company is shutting its plant at Railroad Avenue in Westminster. Founded by Benjamin Franklin Shriver, the company grew from a few scattered vegetable farms to a massive operation spreading throughout Carroll County. The scattered locations made it easier for farmers moving vegetables by horse and wagon. With the advent of the automobile, the Shrivers closed all plants except the one in Westminster. -- Democratic Advocate, Sept. 29, 1969.
