Red Sox to consider Oates

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The Boston Red Sox, who covet Tony La Russa of the Oakland Athletics for their managing vacancy, also have some interest in fired Orioles manager Johnny Oates.

"He's a good baseball guy," Boston general manager Dan Duquette said. "We'd have to consider him."

Kansas City Royals general manager Herk Robinson said he has not discounted the possibility of Oates becoming a candidate.

Oakland and Boston are believed to be the leaders in the La Russa derby, which includes the Orioles and Texas Rangers as potential suitors.

"I haven't heard from anybody today," Oates said. "I'm here doing a crossword puzzle and watching 'Jeopardy' at the same time, trying to get smarter."
