An anniversary is always something to celebrate. A 25th anniversary is something noteworthy, indeed.

Yesterday, Eldersburg Elementary School began celebrating the school's 25th year as part of the community, with the dedication of a sign in front of the school.

The student body marched in a parade around the school, with each grade displaying a student-made banner honoring the school's 25-year history. Many of the students had dressed in the school's colors, green and white, for the occasion.

The PTA purchased and installed the new sign, which is lettered with the school name and features a dinosaur -- the school mascot. About 40 students were involved with cutting the ribbon, unwrapping the sign, decorating the sign with large silver bows and stating what they liked best about their school.

The students delighted present and former faculty by singing a new school song, written last year by teacher Barbara Cohen and former music teacher Betty May.

The school has planned student activities for each month during the year to honor the silver anniversary. Next month, a mini-obstacle course of 25 stations will test students' athletic skills.

The PTA of Carrolltowne Elementary is sponsoring a Meet the Candidates Night at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 in the school cafeteria. Parents and other residents will have the opportunity to meet the four candidates vying for two seats on the Board of Education.

Each candidate will have three to five minutes to express his views and goals as a member of the school board.

A question-and-answer session will follow.

The Freedom Area Recreation Council will once again offer dance classes for all ages, beginning in January.

The instructor will be Shellie Rosso, who has performed with the Towson State University Dance Company and the Ellicott City Ballet Guild.

The Rec Council plans to offer classes in ballet and creative movement for children 4 to 6 years old at the new Community Room in Carrolltown Center. Morning and afternoon sessions will be scheduled to accommodate kindergartners.

Additional classes in ballet, tap and jazz will be offered for ages 7 through adult at South Carroll Senior Citizens Center on Bartholow Road.

Registration for dance classes will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Community Room in Carrolltown Center.
