A 19-year-old Jessup man fell asleep at the wheel, and his car slammed into a metal utility pole in the 9800 block of Washington Blvd. Sunday, Howard County police said.
Robert Lee Schlosser of the 8200 block of Cambridge Court was in serious but stable condition yesterday at the trauma center at Prince George's County Hospital, where a state police helicopter flew him for treatment of a broken ankle, facial and other fractures, and lacerations, police said.
About 1 p.m. Sunday, Mr. Schlosser left his job at a fast-food restaurant in North Laurel because he was tired. As he drove his 1992 Geo north on U.S. 1 in the slow lane, the car veered into the left lane and hit a curb, said Pfc. Owen Smith of the Police Department's traffic enforcement section.
The vehicle rolled onto a grassy median, then into the right north bound lane, where it hit a utility pole on the right side of the road, police said.
