THE Johns Hopkins University School of Continuing Studies has plenty to celebrate. Earlier this month, a team of graduate business students from the school's Division of Business and Management won first place in the third annual National Black MBA Association Student Case Competition in San Francisco.
The Hopkins contenders beat out teams from 24 other business schools across the country, including such heavies as the University of Michigan, the University of Virginia, Duke University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The three winners are all part-time students in the School of Continuing Studies' Leadership Development Program for Minority Managers, a four-year-old effort by Hopkins to identify talented African-American managers in the region and train them for high-level management positions in area corporations. The first class had 22 students, many of whom went on to earn an M.B.A. from Hopkins after completing the program. This year's class will have 25 students, and the school hopes to have produced more than 100 African-American managers poised for leadership roles by the end of this year.
Before the competition, the students were given four weeks to develop a marketing plan for a line of cosmetic products. The competition took place in two rounds that included a 20-minute presentation and a 10-minute question and answer session.
Team members Blair Johnson and Helen Holten are recent graduates of the leadership program now finishing the master's at Hopkins. Mr. Johnson, a resident of Bowie, is a systems and training analyst with Potomac Electric Power Company. Ms. Holten, of Baltimore, is president and founder of Resource One Management Group. Jerome Alston, the third member of the team, is a student in the leadership program and serves as a process engineering manager for AT&T.; The team was coached by Tina Rodriquez, a partner in Sage Dining Services and a former professor in the Hopkins management program.
