For three quarters yesterday, Woodlawn and Dulaney battled to a scoreless stalemate.
But it only took a few seconds for Woodlawn quarterback Keion Carpenter to turn a busted play into a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and the host Warriors went on to post a 14-6 win over the Lions in Baltimore County 3A-4A League action.
On first down at the Lions' 16-yard-line, Carpenter was forced to scramble after his intended receiver broke the wrong way.
Carpenter was nearly thrown for a loss, but he escaped from thgrasp of Dulaney's Dan Mullen and ran 16 yards for the touchdown.
Anthony Reid's run for the two-point conversion gave the Warriors an 8-0 lead with 10:32 remaining.
"A lot of times you can make a big play out of a broken play because you can catch people out of position," Woodlawn coach Brian Scriven said. "He got around the corner and it was all Keion Carpenter."
Carpenter (9-for-17, 152 yards passing) helped Woodlawn extend its lead to 14-0 on a 26-yard touchdown pass to Carlton Wheeler with 3:17 left.
The key play in the drive was a 49-yard run by Albert Boyd.
Dulaney (2-1, 1-1), which had not penetrated past the Woodlawn 22 until that point, responded with an eight-play, 91-yard drive that culminated in an 8-yard touchdown pass from Andy Carroll to Tom Bell (23 carries for 101 yards rushing) with 1:16 remaining.
Dulaney's run for the two-point conversion failed, as did its attempt to retrieve an onsides kick. The Warriors then ran out the clock.
The Warriors (2-1, 1-0) had some success on offense before Carpenter's touchdown, but they were hurt by turnovers.
Dulaney junior Brian D'Anna intercepted two passes inside the Lions' 30 and recovered a fumble.
Despite the loss, Dulaney first-year coach Jeff Mann was impressed by his team's effort against a bigger Woodlawn team.
"Our goal every game is to gain respect from our opponent," said Mann, who took over a team that was 1-9 last season.
