VOLUNTEER WORK: Ms. Monch is distinguished by two trademarks: wearing a hat almost everywhere and, more importantly, her volunteer work.

She recently was elected to her second consecutive two-year term as president of the Harbor Hospital Center Auxiliary, overseeing the hospital's gift shop operations and assisting with fund-raisers.

She also is president of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Chapter 680 in Annapolis, a post she has held for almost six years. She remains active in the Ladies Auxiliary for the

Maryland State Fireman's Association. She serves as the head of the Former Presidents Club for that organization and is president of a civic group in Brooklyn.

VOLUNTEER'S COMMENT: "I have always been somewhere doing something. I love people and enjoy doing whatever I can to help.

"I love working at the hospital. They can't have all the staff and equipment they need without funds. All of the proceeds from the gift shop go to the betterment of the hospital. We have some very dedicated volunteers, and the hospital's very good to us [the auxiliary].

"Whenever I'm needed, I'm ready to volunteer. I like to extend myself to help others. My motto has always been, 'Be good to people and they'll be good to you.' "

ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER: A lifelong resident of the Eastport section of Annapolis, her ties to the northern end of the county began with childhood visits to relatives in the Brooklyn Park area.

She worked at Annapolis Bank and Trust Co. for 17 years and owned and operated the Elite Motel in Ocean City for a decade.

Ms. Monch is an active member of Eastport Baptist Church.
