Santos will guide Prenup in Sprint

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The Maryland Million drew its second big-name jockey yesterday when trainer Mark Hennig said that Jose Santos will be aboard his Grade I winner, Prenup, in the Maryland Million Sprint next Saturday at Laurel Race Course.

Santos, who is 10th in the national standings, will join No. 1-ranked Mike Smith among Maryland Million jockeys.

In addition to Prenup, Santos will ride the Hennig-trained Icy Warning in the Maryland Million Ladies turf stakes.

Prenup was ridden by Jerry Bailey in his last start, when the horse won the Jerome Handicap at Belmont Park, but Bailey chose to ride Pimlico-based Concern next Saturday in the $750,000 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs.

Kent Desormeaux, who usually rides in the Maryland Million, also will be at the Super Derby, riding Soul Of The Matter.

NOTES: New York-based trainer John De Stefano is taking on Grade I Test Stakes winner Twist Afleet again today with Penny's Reshoot in the $100,000 Columbia Stakes at Pimlico. "We hope to sit a chilly fourth and catch the speed -- Twist Afleet, Fashion Maven and Pagofire -- in the stretch," De Stefano said. Penny's Reshoot finished second on a sloppy track to Twist Afleet in the Test. Mike Luzzi, fourth in the Belmont Park standings, is the rider. . . . The entire Kentucky Cup card from Turfway Park will be simulcast today at all Maryland betting outlets.
