Caps lift preseason mark to 4-1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- With nearly all their offensive weapons on display and two veteran goalies sharing the net last night, the Washington Capitals earned their fourth preseason victory in five games, beating the Quebec Nordiques, 6-1, before 5,125 at Independence Arena.

Today, the road show moves to Greensboro for a 7 p.m. game against the Florida Panthers.

The Caps scored four times in an 8:57 span of the second period, with Steve Konowalchuk, Peter Bondra, Kerry Clark and Michal Pivonka scoring. Jason Allison and Ken Klee added goals in the third period.

Goalie Rick Tabaracci, playing in his first preseason game, allowed Quebec's goal, on a power play by Scott Young. Don Beaupre played the final 30 minutes.

* NOTES: Right wing Rob Pearson suffered a slashed right hand in the first period. . . . General manager David Poile sent formal contract offers to representatives for veteran defenseman Kevin Hatcher and junior defensive star Brendan Witt and said he hopes the offers will generate a response by the holdout players.
