Up-and-coming MacPhie to join Shriver tourney

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Brian MacPhie, a rising American tennis star, will join Jim Courier, Todd Martin and John McEnroe at Pam Shriver's Signet Bank Tennis Challenge on Sept. 29 at the Baltimore Arena.

MacPhie, 22, will play McEnroe in an exhibition singles match before teaming with Martin for a one-set doubles match against Courier and McEnroe.

"Brian's big serve and hard-hitting style makes him the perfect opponent for McEnroe," said Shriver, the tournament chairwoman.

Last year, the left-hander reached the doubles quarterfinals at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon. So far this year, the San Jose, Calif., native has won doubles championships at open tournaments in Los Angeles, Birmingham, Ala., and Winnetka, Ill.

Tickets for the event range from $9 to $75 and are available at the Baltimore Arena and all Ticketmaster outlets. To charge tickets by phone, call (410) 481-SEAT.

Proceeds will benefit the Baltimore Community Foundation for children's-related charities.
