POLICE

* Melrose: A 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier, taken illegally from Spotsylvania, Va., was destroyed by fire after it ran off Grand Valley Road near the Pennsylvania line about 12:20 a.m. yesterday. State police said the driver was heading south on the highway and failed to negotiate a sharp right curve. The auto ran off the left side of Grand Valley Road and struck a tree. The driver fled, police said. The owner of the vehicle lives in Fredericksburg, Va., they reported.

* Lineboro: Firefighters from Lineboro and Manchester responded to a house fire in the 600 block of Lineboro Road at 5:01 a.m. Wednesday. Units were out 34 minutes.
