Stuart Abramowitz, 42, a New York City subway conductor who was shot in the neck and paralyzed when he tried to protect a passenger from her gun-toting ex-boyfriend, died Sept. 8 in Copiague, N.Y. He was shot in February 1992 when he tried to shield a woman who had run to his subway train's conductor's booth. The woman was shot and killed.

Frederick Weisman, 82, a philanthropist, entrepreneur and one of the nation's foremost collectors of contemporary art, died Sunday of cancer in Los Angeles. His gifts included the $5 million in initial funding for the American Center in Paris, which recently opened to promote better U.S.-French relations.

Philip Bosakowski, 47, a prominent playwright died of cancer Sunday in Middletown, Conn. His play "Nixon Apologizes to the Nation" is to debut in New York next spring. His 1985 work "Chopin in Space" won extensive praise from the New York Times.
