Bryn Mawr Mawrtians
1993 record: 8-3-2. Coach: Jeanette Budzik.
Top players: Christine Lazatin, Sr., F; Kristin Garro, Sr., G; Gailor Large, Soph., M/D; Emily Hickman, Jr., M; Maggie Buck, Sr., D; Meredith Mao, Sr., F.
Outlook: The Mawrtians lost a lot of key defenders from a team that reached the tournament semifinal last season before falling in a shootout with Roland Park. But Garro, a strong keeper who allowed one goal during the regular season, could make a difference while the young defense comes together. Plenty of returning talent on the line and in the midfield should keep the Mawrtians contending in the A Division.
Friends Quakers
1993 record: 8-4-2. Coach: Carol Samuels.
Top players: Lauren Ellis, Sr., G; Suzannah Gust, Jr., F; Lydia Reis, Jr., F; Tracy Harrison, Sr., F; Emily Santos, Jr., M.
Outlook: Usually known for their stingy defense, the Quakers return most of their strength on offense. The talented Ellis could be busy, especially early on while the Quakers try to make up for the speed and skill they lost to graduation. For the Quakers to stay in contention in the A Division, they will have to get a lot of scoring from their veteran line.
Garrison Forest Grizzlies
1993 record: 6-4-3. Coach: Micul Ann Morse.
Top players: Missy Hopkins, Sr., F; Tina Schroeter, Sr., D; Lauren Klein, Jr., F; Courtney Austin, Jr., F; Jacque Weitzel, Jr., G; Katie Willett, Sr., D.
Outlook: Perennially late bloomers because of a late start to school, the Grizzlies could get going quickly this year. They return 11 players, including a strong defense anchored by Weitzel, one of the league's top keepers, as well as a lot of firepower on the line. If they can manage to score consistently, the Grizzlies could move right to the top of the A Division.
Lutheran Saints
1993 record: 5-7. Coach: Linda Weinreich.
Top players: Rachel Seaborn, Sr., F; Sara Cole, Jr., D; Brandy Busick, Jr., D; Jen Mosko, Jr., F/D.
Outlook: With most of their strength returning, the Saints should be at least as good as last year's team. Seaborn led the team in scoring last season with eight goals, but Weinreich wants to see a more balanced attack. The defense returns almost intact, so if the Saints can come up with some more offense, they could improve on their 2-4 B Division record.
Maryvale Lions
1993 record: 4-4-4. Coach: Teddi Willis.
Top players: Meghan Doyle, Sr., F; Mary Kate Morris, Jr., G; rTC Megan McCormick, Sr., D; Cathy Kelley, Sr., D; Ashley Manuel, Sr., D; Jenny Gray, Soph., M.
Outlook: The Lions return a solid veteran corps, including Doyle, who scored 11 of the team's 15 goals last season. A well-rounded group that has played together for a couple of years, the Lions have a sound defense anchored by strong keeper Morris as well as scoring punch. If they can tighten up the midfield where they lost some key players, the Lions could be right in the hunt in the A Division.
McDonogh Eagles
1993 record: 9-4-3. Coach: Cathy Schorreck.
Top players: Melissa Pick, Sr., D; Jaime Keener, Sr., M; Leigh Simons, Sr., D; Alison Freidman, Soph., G.
Outlook: After two years as assistant, Schorreck takes over a rebuilding team that might start as many as four freshmen. Seven seniors graduated, leaving just a handful of returning starters. The Eagles have strong individual skills, but they will have to blend in a lot of new faces smoothly. Although they should be competitive in the A Division, the young Eagles will need time to adjust to the caliber of play.
Notre Dame Prep Pirates
1993 record: 9-1-3. Coach: Kathleen Gower.
Top players: Gretchen Ginter, Sr., D; Jenny Chuasiriporn, Sr., F; Ali Helmstetter, Sr., G.
Outlook: The Pirates lost 13 seniors, most of whom started, but they pick up a lot of talent from the league's defending champion junior varsity team. Gower, the Baltimore County Coach of the Year last season, already likes what she sees. The Pirates have balance, skill and just enough veteran talent to keep them among the top teams in the A Division.
Oldfields
1993 record: 4-5-2. Coach: Betsy Jennings.
Top players: Caroline Jones, Sr., F/M; Laurel Mullen, Sr., F/M; Lacy Winn, Sr., D; Liberty Mullen, Sr., D; Brooks DeRamus, Sr., F; Corbett Plaxico, Sr., D.
Outlook: Last year, Oldfields shared the B Division title with Park, after a scoreless double-overtime tie in the title game, and first-year coach Jennings is hoping for a return trip to the championship. With a solid corps of returning seniors and some talented underclassmen, Oldfields looks especially promising on offense. Look for Oldfields to make a strong run at defending its title.
Park Bruins
1993 record: 9-2-1. Coach: Barbara Purkey.
Top players: Alexa Wilder, Sr., F/D; Kara Keith, Sr., F; Kris Heard, Sr., F; Anya Salkowski-Bartlett, Soph., D; Alyssa Valove, Sr., F.
Outlook: The defending B Division co-champs move up to the A Division. In the past, the Bruins have had success against the AIS' best teams, reaching the championship game twice in the early '80s and sharing the title in 1982. This year, however, the Bruins face a rebuilding season. Although they have strength on defense, they need to replace their offensive push in the midfield.
Roland Park Reds
1993 record: 11-3. Coach: Debbie Bloodsworth.
Top players: Meredith Shuey, Jr., G; Ridgely Bennett, Sr., D; Elizabeth Rodgers, Sr., M/D; Lizzy Bennett, Jr., M; Jen Murray, Jr., M; Hedy Born, Jr., F.
Outlook: The Reds have had unprecedented success in recent years, winning or sharing the last five A Division titles. But now the stars are gone, and each of the Reds will have to carry a big load if they plan to make another run at the title. Unfortunately for the rest of the league, a lot of skilled players return and they know how to win, so the Reds should be right back in a run for yet another title.
St. Paul's Gators
1993 record: 1-9-1. Coach: Sandy Hoody.
Top players: Tice Burke, Sr., F; Nikki Satyshur, Jr., M/D; Nancy Sawyer, Sr., D; Danielle Brewster, Sr., M.
Outlook: After losing most of their starters and returning just three seniors, the Gators are young and inexperienced. Still, Hoody has some skill and excellent chemistry with a group that will be building toward making a big move in the A Division next fall. If they can come along steadily, though, the Gators should improve on their record this year.
St. Timothy's
1993 record: 2-5-3. Coach: Janet Powers.
Top players: Erin Bowman, Soph., M; Sherry Edwards, Jr., M.
Outlook: Two years ago, St. Timothy's won the B Division crown, but Powers will be starting from scratch this season. Only one player, Edwards, returns and not a single senior came out for the team. St. Timothy's will have to rely on some new players as well as the top talent up from junior varsity to start building again.
Seton Keough Gators
1993 record: 6-5-1. Coach: Stacey Rakaczky.
Top players: Katie Sparks, Sr., F; Celia Ashton, Sr., G; Jen Wagener, Sr., D; Karen Geppi, Sr., F; Beth Sokol, Sr., F; Renee Foard, Sr., D.
Outlook: The Gators lost just three starters and return six strong seniors, so they could be in position to make a big move in the B Division. Ashton was one of the division's top keepers last season and she will have some solid defense in front of her. Most of the line also returns, giving the Gators plenty of offensive potential.
