For two full days the birds were gone

subjected, I feared, to some unknown

predator; empty ledges at dawn

brought chill to heart hopes -- flown

to barren fastness where there is no bird.

And yet, today they all returned

in a noisy cloud, deferred

by their mystery banquet;

satiated and unconcerned.
