A Brooklyn Park man, wearing nothing but his skin, was apprehended after a high-speed car chase and crash in Carroll County early Saturday, police said.

Lewis Weitzel, 44, suffered head and facial injuries in the accident and was treated at Carroll County General Hospital, according to Taneytown Officer Edward Engel.

City officers said state police radioed them about 1:15 a.m. that a Chevrolet station wagon was headed from Westminster toward Taneytown on Route 140, being driven recklessly.

Officers Engel, Paul Wingate and Daniel White had their patrol cars parked on Route 140 near Big Pipe Creek, about 1 1/2 miles outside Taneytown, when they saw the Chevrolet hurtle by. They reported they chased it at speeds of 115 mph.

The station wagon ran a stop sign, hit a ditch and flew 15 feet into the air, Officer Engel said. It landed on the driver's side, hit a bump, flipped over to the passenger side and slid into a weedy field, he said.

It bounced upright, and the man at the wheel tried to drive away, but stopped when the officers drew their guns, they reported.

When the driver stepped out of the station wagon, police said, he was naked. He was allowed to put on clothing that was in the car before going to the hospital.

Mr. Weitzel was charged with driving in excess of 100 mph in a 40-mph zone, two counts of fleeing police, reckless and negligent driving and failure to stop at a stop sign. The charges carry a penalty of up to two years in jail, the officers said.

The man, of the 600 block of Freeman St., gave no reason for his lack of attire, police said. He was released with orders to appear in court.
