Gov. William Donald Schaefer probably will meet with Los Angeles Rams officials during an economic development trip to California that begins Saturday.

Orioles owner Peter G. Angelos, who is heading a group interested in bringing the team to Baltimore, also is expected to be in Los Angeles at the end of the week.

Yesterday, Schaefer, who has made the return of the NFL to Baltimore a top priority in the remaining days of his administration, declined to comment on the Rams. "As far as I know, I'm going to meet the Disney people," he said.

Mark Wasserman, secretary of the state's Department of Economic and Employment Development, said the purpose of the trip is to boost the state's film and television business. He said he was unaware of any plans to meet with the Rams.

"This has been in the planning for a long time," he said of the entertainment industry effort.

Angelos was unavailable for comment.

However, another source familiar with the governor's plans said a Rams visit was in the planning.

Rams spokeswoman Heidi Sinclair also said that a courtesy meeting between Schaefer and Rams president John Shaw was under discussion. "It appears that it is going to take place," she said.

Meanwhile, Rams officials increasingly sound as if they are prepared to leave Anaheim, Calif., their current home.

In an interview published Saturday in the Los Angeles Times, Shaw said the offer from a group of Anaheim boosters, who proposed building a new stadium for the baseball Angels and renovating Anaheim Stadium for the Rams, did not seem workable.

"If we maximize the dollars out of the proposal in Anaheim, it is not equal to what was being offered in newer facilities in Baltimore and St. Louis," Shaw said.

Baltimore, St. Louis and Hartford, Conn., are trying to lure the Rams.
