One Last Look

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The dunes stand stark

bared by the rising sun

Backlighted wavelets wash the shore

in silent persistence

Leftover sand castles crumble

melt into the tide

The crispness of the early morning

defines with clarity

Random patches of shade

dotting the vistas flee the infringing daylight

Organizations of slender reeds cast

long wavering shadows

Fading footprints still trace

irregular paths duneward

Soaring gulls intone

a mawkish serenade

Cautious shore birds wade and peck

in new formed tidal pools

Last night there was frost

Summer is at rest
