David Wright

David Wright 74, the South African-born poet who said being deaf since childhood gave him an unusual view of truth, died of cancer on Aug. 28 in London. In addition to his poetry, he produced guides to Portugal, an autobiography, anthologies of verse, book reviews, a biography of fellow South African poet Roy Campbell and translations of "Beowulf" and "The Canterbury Tales." As a child, he caught scarlet fever, and the illness left him deaf.

Barbara Hammer Avedon

Barbara Hammer Avedon, 64, a screenwriter, feminist and peace activist who co-created the "Cagney & Lacey" TV series, died Wednesday of cancer in Los Angeles. During the Vietnam War, she helped found Another Mother for Peace. The group's motto, "War Is Not Healthy for Children and Other Living Things," became a byword for war protesters. She began her screenwriting career with episodes of "The Donna Reed Show," "Father Knows Best" and "Bewitched."

Hollis B. Chenery

Hollis B. Chenery 77, an economist and the World Bank's vice president for development policy for most of the 1970s, died Thursday of pneumonia at home in Santa Fe, N.M. The former professor at Harvard and Stanford universities had also worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Jean Gannett Hawley

Jean Gannett Hawley, 70, publisher and chairwoman of Guy Gannett Communications, died Sunday in Portland, Maine. Under her direction, Guy Gannett Communications -- formerly Guy Gannett Publishing Co. -- expanded and diversified its holdings. It operates daily and weekly newspapers, TV stations, broadcast towers and other holdings in several states. She kept a low profile, but behind the scenes she was a force for public service journalism and a philanthropist supporting causes ranging from the arts to acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
