Groups to sponsor candidates forum Oct. 8

A candidates forum will be sponsored by 14 organizations, including the Howard County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the League of Women Voters, the National Council of Jewish Women and the Howard County Bar Association, on Oct. 8 at Smith Auditorium, Howard Community College in Columbia.

The introduction will be from 9 a.m. to 9:10 a.m.; school board candidates from 9:10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.; county executive, 10:20 a.m. to 11 a.m.; County Council, 11:05 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; House of Delegates, 1:15 p.m. to 2:25 p.m.; state Senate, 2:30 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.; and state's attorney, 3:25 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Parking will be free.

Candidate John Clark files to create PAC

Yesterday John Clark, candidate for the House of Delegates, District 14B, filed papers with the State Board of Elections establishing the Maryland Governmental Reforms Initiatives Political Action Committee.

The chairman of the committee is Bela Palley Jr., of Carroll County. The treasurer is Gerald Snavely of Frederick County. If elected, Mr. Clark says, he intends to work closely with this committee.

The Maryland Governmental Reforms Initiatives PAC plans to establish a grass-roots statewide movement focusing on amending the Maryland Constitution to provide for petition process for ballot referendums on state government and to establish term limits of eight years (the same as for the governor) for members of the General Assembly.

Mundy gets support of Democratic club

James P. Mundy, a candidate for the state Senate in District 14, has been endorsed by the Ellicott City Democratic Club. The endorsement is Mr. Mundy's 19th. He was most recently endorsed by the Maryland State Fraternal Order of Police.

Democrats to hold Labor Day picnic

The Howard County Democratic Central Committee will hold its annual Labor Day picnic from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at Cedar Lane West, off Route 108.

The cost of $5 per person or $8 per couple includes food.

Friends of Willis plan celebration

The Friends of Casey Willis will sponsor a celebration from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Sept. 9 at the Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City.

Carolyn "Casey" Willis is a Democratic candidate for the House of Delegates in District 14.

Music will be provided by Opus I. Tickets are $50.

AARP to hold candidate forum

The American Association of Retired Persons Howard County will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Florence Bain Senior Center.

The meeting will feature candidates for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

Flapjack Fest set by Senator McCabe

The family and friends of state Sen. Christopher J. McCabe will hold their fourth annual Fall Flapjack Fest from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Howard County School of Technology, 10920 Route 108 in Ellicott City.

Featured will be a silent auction, Redskins ticket raffle, pumpkins for sale and brunch.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $3 for children ages 5 to 14. Children under 5 eat for free. Information: 531-2870.
