Hampstead woman sues USDA claiming sex bias

A Hampstead woman has filed suit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture, claiming sex discrimination in her job.

Diana Safar alleges that she was denied a promotion by the Carroll County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service because she was pregnant.

According to her suit, she filed a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and a settlement was reached, but afterward her supervisor subjected her to "continual abuse and harassment." Eventually she resigned, but later she applied again for the higher-level job that she had been denied.

In the interview, the suit alleges, she was questioned about the EEOC complaint.

Ms. Safar is seeking back pay and other damages.

The trial is expected to start next week in U.S. District Court in Baltimore.

Hoods Mill Landfill open on Saturdays only

The Carroll County government reminds citizens that Hoods Mill Landfill is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays only to residents in cars, passenger vans or pickups with a capacity of three-fourths ton or under.

No "white goods" containing refrigerant (such as air conditioners, refrigerators or freezers) will be accepted at Hoods Mill.

All other white goods, residential trash, recyclables and yard waste will be accepted as per landfill regulations.

Northern Landfill in Westminster is open to residents and commercial haulers from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
