Formula One -- Announced that Nigel Mansell will rejoin his old Williams-Renault team for the last three Grand Prix races of the year. Announced that points leader Michael Schumacher lost his appeal of a suspension and a disqualification in the British GP and will miss the next two races.


Boston Red Sox -- Renewed their player development contract with the Utica Blue Sox of the short-season Single-A New York-Penn League.

Chicago White Sox -- Petitioned the Arizona Fall League for permission for Michael Jordan, batting .202 in Double-A, to play during the 1994 season.

Florida Marlins -- Promoted Al Avila, special consultant to the GM, to director of Latin American operations.

New York Yankees -- Recalled P Joe Ausanio from Triple-A Columbus.

Oakland Athletics -- Announced that 1B Mark McGwire underwent surgery on his left heel and is out for the season, if it resumes.

Howe SportsData International -- Announced that Bowie OF Alex Ochoa was named Double-A Eastern League Batter of the Week.


NBA -- Disapproved the contract signed by Portland Trail Blazers C Chris Dudley.

Charlotte Hornets -- Signed F Darrin Hancock to a multi-year contract.

Golden State Warriors -- Re-signed G Keith Jennings.

New York Knicks -- Re-signed C Herb Williams.

Mexico Aztecas (CBA) -- Named Mack Calvin coach.


IBF -- Announced that James Toney will defend his IBF super middleweight title against Roy Jones Jr. on Nov. 18 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.


NCAA -- Placed Ball State athletics program on probation for two years for recruiting and extra-benefits violations involving men's basketball students. Also announced Disneyland has resigned as Pigskin Classic sponsor.

Sun Bowl -- The El Paso, Texas, city council voted to set aside $600,000 to cover any shortfalls that the former John Hancock Bowl may encounter in putting on the game.

Iowa -- Announced basketball recruit F James Head has been denied admission for failing to meet academic requirements.

Mississippi State -- Announced that its football program is being investigated for four possible NCAA violations.

Nevada-Las Vegas -- Announced that basketball C Dennis Jordan and F Brian Hocevar will not enroll for the coming semester. Also, attorney Morton Galane of Las Vegas said he has agreed to serve as special counsel in the probe of basketball coach Rollie Massimino's secret salary deal.

Penn State -- Announced that LB Brian Gelzheiser and FS Josh Kroell, who are starters, and LB Jim Nelson will not play Saturday night because of injuries.

Towson State -- Named Ashley Duncan the school's first full-time women's lacrosse coach.

Virginia Tech -- Announced that if the Hokies win at least six football games this season, coach Frank Beamer's contract will be extended by five years.

Wisconsin -- Said that students will be frisked on their way into football games at Camp Randall Stadium to help prevent another stampede like the one that injured dozens last year.


Arizona Cardinals -- Signed WR Kevin Knox, QB Chris Swartz, CB Perry Carter and LB Darryl Hardy to the practice squad.

Atlanta Falcons -- Signed G David Richards.

Chicago Bears -- Terminated contract of CB Anthony Blaylock. Signed LB Darwin Ireland, S Anthony Marshall, WR Greg Primus and OL Todd Norman to practice squad.
