Steve Hall and Tom Winegardner, who had gone 36 holes for the men's club championship at Old South Country Club Sunday, returned to the club yesterday to go 1-2 in sectional qualifying for the U.S. Mid-Amateur championship.
Hall, (0-2 in the past two club finals), playing in the first group, returned a 2-under-par 35-3570, beating a midday rainstorm in the process. Winegardner, winner of the past three club titles and one of a large segment of the 100 starters who played in the rain, was 2-under par through 12 holes before slipping back with 34-3973.
Reigning Middle Atlantic Amateur champion Barry McCarty, from Belle Haven CC, double-bogeyed the first hole, got back to even after eight holes and went on to finish 36-3874. With seven places available, there was a five-way playoff at 75 for the last four spots.
Adrian Druzgala of Hobbit's Glen; Robert Vallis, from the Mid-Ocean Club in Bermuda; and Eddie Walker of Chantilly National got in with pars at the first hole. Stu Strang of Argyle CC went on to outlast Dave Rasley, a former Maryland State Amateur champion and the last player to finish his regulation round, advancing with a par at the sixth extra hole.
Hall, who hit 16 greens in regulation, three-putted the first hole for bogey, then played the next 15 holes 4-under par with birdies inside of 10 feet.
This was the first Mid-Am qualifying try for Hall, 35, a one-time Maryland Amateur Stroke Play titlist. In contrast, it was McCarty's first successful bid after being a five-time Mid-Am alternate.
