The National Hard Crab Derby has become a Labor Day weekend tradition in Crisfield, attracting a loyal following for more than 40 years.

This year's derby begins Friday with a crab-cooking contest at Crisfield High School. Festival grounds at Somers Cove Marina will be open that evening from 6 to 10, with rides, games and musical entertainment.

Saturday is the big day. The schedule includes a swim meet at 10 a.m., a street parade at noon, a boat show, rides, games, concessions, the National Coast Guard drill team, a crab-picking contest and musical entertainment. Highlight of the weekend is the crab derby at 3 p.m., preceded by the Governor's Cup Race in which governors from other states each sponsor a crab.

Saturday evening there will be musical entertainment and country line dancing in the crab bowl until 10. Sunday is the final day, and entertainment is scheduled throughout the afternoon and evening in the crab bowl, concluding with fireworks at 9:30 p.m.
