Larry Washington is not a member of the Maryland football team, but he will remain on scholarship through the fall semester.

Coach Mark Duffner announced Thursday that Washington, a senior running back from Randallstown whose playing time has diminished since his freshman year, had quit the team. Washington, who had missed three days of practice, disputed that and said that the Terps said he had quit so that they could revoke his scholarship.

Washington met yesterday morning with Sue Tyler, the senior associate director of athletics. He later spoke with Duffner for the first time since he stopped attending practice.

"We talked the situation through," Tyler said. "We have every right to pull his [scholarship], but we're going to let him hold on to it. This is going to let him focus on his studies. That's what he wanted."

Washington said he will attend Maryland this fall, then probably transfer to a Division I-AA school. He has one season of eligibility.
