A West Baltimore youth who surrendered to police yesterday morning, hours after he was identified as the suspect in the shootings of a 21-year-old man and a 4-year-old girl who was hit by an apparent stray bullet, appeared before a District Court commissioner early this morning and was held without bail pending a bail review hearing today before a District Court judge, police said.

Varion Romeo Simms, 15, of the 2200 block of Roslyn Ave. was charged as an adult with two counts of attempted murder and handgun violations.

The youth is charged with shooting Jacquette Bianca Dennis, who was wounded in the left side of her head as she played in front of a social club in the 2700 block of Pennsylvania Ave. late Tuesday night.

Also injured in the shooting was Ronald Alexander, 21, of the 300 block of S. Dallas Court in Southeast Baltimore. He was shot once in back of his thigh and was listed in satisfactory condition yesterday at Sinai Hospital.

Police said the Simms youth walked into the Northwestern police station about 8 a.m. Thursday. His name had been widely reported Wednesday night on television and in yesterday morning's newspapers.

Officer Sabrina V. Tapp-Harper, a police spokeswoman, said homicide detectives have not established a motive for the shootings, which occurred about 10:55 p.m. Wednesday.

Officer Harper said police recovered a Toyota Camry that may have been used in the attack but have not found a weapon.

Meanwhile, Jacquette's condition remained unchanged at Johns Hopkins Hospital yesterday. A hospital spokeswoman, Debbie Bangledorf, said the girl still suffered seizures. She was in critical, but stable condition.
