COLLEGE PARK -- The University of Maryland today named Debbie Yow as its new athletic director. Ms. Yow signed a five-year contract with the Terrapins with a base salary of $130,000 per year.
Ms. Yow, who compiled an impressive record as a women's basketball coach early in her career, has been athletic director at Saint Louis University since 1990.
"I am coming to the University of Maryland because I believe that the athletic program can become one of the nation's best," Ms. Yow said. "In addition, this is a return to my roots on the East Coast and in the Atlantic Coast Conference."
Last year, with Ms. Yow as AD and Charley Spoonhour as coach, the Saint Louis men's basketball team made it to the NCAA postseason tournament for the first time in 37 years. The Billikens lost, ironically, to Maryland in the first round.
Saint Louis graduated 92 percent of its athletes last year. That figure ranked 10th among 301 Division I schools.
Ms. Yow, a native of Gibsonville, N.C., and the sister of North Carolina State women's basketball coach Kay Yow, coached women's basketball at Kentucky, Florida and Oral Roberts.
She has fund-raising experience at Florida, which may help her in her new duties. The Terrapin athletic deficit is about $6.5 million.
Ms. Yow is the fourth UM athletic director in the past eight years.
