50 Years Ago (Week of Aug. 6-12, 1944):

* Four men were arrested in connection with repeated thefts of gasoline from a tank on the Clarksville area farm of Howard Ortel. The police made plaster casts of tire tracks found near the gasoline tank and matched them with tires on the vehicle used by the suspects in the case.

* A new schedule of trash collection for Ellicott City was announced by the county commissioners. Garbage would be collected daily on Main Street between 8:30 and 10 a.m. Empty garbage cans would have to be off the street by 10:30 a.m. Trash (cartons, bags, etc.) would be collected daily at 4 p.m. Other parts of Ellicott City would have refuse collected two or three times a week. The twice-daily schedule for Main Street was part of an effort to stop people from dumping their refuse into the Tiber River.
