Youth baseball

Host Winfield swept four games to win its 9-under baseball tournament. It beat Sykesville, 10-4, to win the championship.

Winfield opened the tournament with a 19-5 victory over Pikesville. It scored 12 runs in the fourth to break the game open.

Jake Mead and Erik Vollmerhausen each had two-run singles in the big Winfield inning. Mead was 2-for-2 and drove in two runs, and Vollmerhausen went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Ryan Webb went 3-for-4 and scored four runs.

Winfield then rallied for two runs in its final at-bat to edge Damascus, 5-4. Stephen Moore's infield hit drove in the tying run.

Winfield then dealt Sykesville a 12-3 loss in the winners' bracket finale.

Walter Pyzik's three-run double keyed a seven-run sixth inning for the winners.

Moore and Jonnie Jenkins were each 2-for-3 for Winfield; Will McEvoy and Vollmerhausen each went 2-for-4.

Starting pitcher Vollmerhausen yielded one run and struck out seven in three innings in gaining the win. Corey Greene struck out four Sykesville batters in two relief innings.

In the title game, Sykesville scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning, narrowing a 5-1 Winfield lead to 5-4.

But Winfield put the game away with a five-run home fifth, highlighted by McEvoy's two-run single.

Vollmerhausen was 2-for-2 for the winners, and Shane Beccio 2-for-3.

Starter Mead, who yielded one run in three innings, got the win.

Sykesville had opened with a 9-6 win over Hampstead. It scored six times in the fourth to overcome a 4-1 Hampstead lead.

Stephen Peck's bases-loaded triple put Sykesville ahead for good.

Sykesville then beat Towson, 11-10. Sykesville rallied for four runs in the home fourth to pull ahead of Towson, 11-7, and then held on.

Michael Morley's single scored one run in the inning, and Jonathan Roscoe's two-run double scored the tying and go-ahead runs for Sykesville. Brian Farley was 2-for-2.

Sykesville then met Hampstead in the final losers' bracket game, winning 8-3 in extra innings.

Ryan Hotaling's homer and Jeff Mech's two-run single accounted for the Hampstead runs.

With the game tied at three, Sykesville scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Michael Morley had a two-run double and Chris Leonard, a two-run single in the inning.

Morley had two doubles in the game and Jonathan Roscoe was %% 2-for-4.

Reliever Blake Stewart shut out Hampstead over the final three innings to get the win.

Hampstead had reached the showdown with Sykesville by topping Damascus, 7-6.

Hampstead built a 7-2 lead after two innings. It hung on as Damascus scored three in its final at-bat and had the bases loaded before making the final out.

Hotaling hit a three-run homer in the second for Hampstead.
