LOS ANGELES -- Despite concerns by other officials that the O. J. Simpson trial could hurt the turnout in the Nov. 8 election, Gov. Pete Wilson and Democratic challenger Kathleen Brown found some common ground -- saying the trial should not be interrupted.

"I don't think there should be any interference in the trial, and the idea that the election will be disrupted . . . and people won't vote is ridiculous," Mr. Wilson said yesterday.

A spokesman for Ms. Brown said that she also does not believe the public will be distracted by the trial.

Acting Secretary of State Tony Miller had asked Superior Court Judge Lance Ito to recess the trial on Nov. 7 and 8 so that it would not divert public attention from the election.
