* Philip P. Hallie, an award-winning author and retired head of the philosophy department at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., died Sunday of a heart attack. He was 72. Mr. Hallie was noted for his 1979 book, "Lest Innocent Blood Be Shed," a story of a French village whose residents saved 5,000 refugees from Nazi death camps. It won the Christopher Society Award as the best nonfiction book of 1979. Mr. Hallie became an instructor at Wesleyan in 1952 and chairman of the philosophy department in 1965. He retired in 1988.
