The widow of a Taneytown man killed in March when he drove into a sinkhole on Route 31 has given birth to the couple's son.

Nancy Lee Knight gave birth to Robert Wayne Knight Jr. about 6 p.m. Sunday at Carroll County General Hospital.

The senior Robert Wayne Knight, 24, was killed March 31 while on a break from his job at the Westminster Wastewater Treatment Plant, when he drove into a sinkhole that had formed unexpectedly on Route 31 west of Medford Road.

The couple, who knew the child would be a boy, had planned to name the baby Caleb. But Mrs. Knight decided to name the child after his father, said the Rev. Tom DiMaggio, the pastor of the Firm Foundation Rock Church.

In a written statement, Mrs. Knight and her other children -- Samantha, Valerie and Daniel -- sent "heart-felt thanks" to well-wishers and those who contributed to a memorial fund set up in her husband's name by the church.

Much of the money collected for the fund was spent on a new vehicle for the Knight family and some went toward roof repairs to their Taneytown home, Mr. DiMaggio said.

Contributions are still being accepted by the Robert W. Knight Memorial Fund, 2119 Coon Club Road, Westminster, 21157.
