Two people from Towson escaped injury when a heavily laden truck towing a water-filled hydrospreader toppled over onto their car near Westminster Friday afternoon.

George Green, the driver of the car, a Plymouth Sundance, said he told his passenger, Virginia R. Smith, both of the 400 block of Oak Lane, to get out of the car quickly because he feared the vehicles might catch fire and trap them inside.

State police Tfc. George Noyes said the 1-ton Ford truck, owned by the Outside Unlimited Landscaping Co., was loaded with hay and fertilizer and was pulling the hydrospreader as it was driving south about 1:15 p.m. on Route 140.

When the driver of the truck, Daniel S. Bell of Reisterstown, applied the brakes at Sandymount Road, police said, the truck began sliding on the road, which was wet and slippery from rain that day.

The hydrospreader trailer fishtailed. The truck ran into a trailer, carrying a Bobcat front-end loader, that was being towed by another Outside Unlimited truck.

Mr. Bell's truck rode up onto the trailer, lifting the front of the truck and causing it to topple over onto the car, police said. The trailer broke loose, drifted to the guardrail and stopped.

None of the four landscape company employees in the trucks was injured. The accident blocked one of the southbound lanes for about an hour while the truck was righted and the vehicles were towed away.

Charges were pending against Mr. Bell, police said.
