* 14-and-under boys -- Two Carroll County teams put up a good fight for the championship of the Hanover 14-under tournament before falling.

The Royal Raiders knocked the Carroll County Rangers into third place in the final rankings when they beat their fellow Carroll countians, 13-1, in the losers' bracket final.

The Raiders then dropped an 18-15 slugfest to Cockeysville in the championship game.

The Rangers fell into an early hole in the double-elimination affair by forfeiting their opening game. But they quickly recovered in the losers' bracket by topping South Hanover, 12-2.

Craig Wyatt and Richard Veit stifled the Pennsylvanians on one hit and combined for nine strikeouts. Adam Crowl provided all the support the two needed with a three-run homer.

Eric Ford was 3-for-3 with three runs scored for the Rangers, Steve Pyzik was 2-for-4, scoring twice, and Eric Etzel went 2-for-3 with a triple for the winners.

Todd Asplen homered, and Craig Miller broke a 4-4 tie with a sixth-inning RBI double, as the Rangers edged Reisterstown, 5-4, in their next game. Reliever Mike Porter pitched the seventh inning to get the save.

The Rangers then won a 10-inning affair from Hanover National, 12-10.

Hanover scored five runs in the home sixth to erase a 4-0 Ranger lead and put the Rangers on the ropes entering the seventh. Jesse Martin's two-run triple put the Rangers ahead before Hanover tied it, 6-6, in the home half.

The teams exchanged four-run bursts in the ninth inning before Matt Thompson's two-run single broke the 10-all tie and gave the Rangers the win in the 10th. Thompson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the winners and Bryan Bollinger added a 2-for-3 effort.

Martin was the big gun for the Rangers. He went 4-for-6 with two doubles and a triple, driving in three runs and scoring two.

In the next game the Rangers jumped ahead with a seven-run second inning, and hung on to beat Pikesville, 8-6. Then, the Rangers dropped the 13-1 verdict to the Royal Raiders in the losers' bracket finals.

Raiders pitchers Derrin Martin and Mike Weyant held the Rangers to only one hit. Weyant also helped his own cause, going 3-for-4 and driving in two runs. Vince Stonesifer was also 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Raiders, as was Mike Harp.

Chris Richmond was 3-for-4 for the winners, scoring two runs.

The Raiders had opened the tourney with a 10-4 win over Fallston. The winners exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning and cruised thereafter.

Weyant went 3-for-4 in the game, including a two-run homer; Bryan Davidson added a 2-for-4 effort.

Royals left-hander Danny Ryan threw a four-hitter at Hanover National in his team's 10-2 second-game win. Catonsville, though, then dropped the Royals into the losers' bracket with a 7-5 win.

The Raiders recovered and dispatched the Rangers before facing Catonsville again, having to beat that Baltimore County team twice to win. The Raiders jumped to an 8-3 lead after two innings, but Catonsville erupted for eight runs in the fifth, and went on to take the title.

Chris Richard rapped a three-run triple, and went 3-for-5 for the Raiders in the final game.

Derrin Martin, Vince Stonesifer and Mike Harp were each 3-for-5 for the Raiders, with Harp driving in three runs and Martin two. Mike Weyant went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Raiders.
