No one personifies the Milwaukee Brewers' up-and-down season more than pitcher Cal Eldred. He struggled early, peaked in June and returned to average form in July.

Eldred tonight attempts to ignite the Brewers on another winning stretch as they start a four-game series vs. the Orioles tonight at Milwaukee County Stadium.

During the 14-game losing streak in May, Milwaukee's starting pitchers posted a 7.56 ERA. Eldred, the staff ace, went 0-3 with a 10.51 ERA during that span. He finished May with a 4-6 record, allowing four or more first-inning runs three times in the first two months.

When the Brewers won 16 of 26 games in June, Eldred responded on cue. He won five of six, had a 2.29 ERA and was named the American League's Pitcher of the Month.

As the Brewers have settled down to playing at a .500 level, Eldred has declined from his spectacular form in June.

In his past three starts, Eldred is 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA. However, on Saturday, Eldred held Boston to one run on four hits as he evened his record at 10-10.

Eldred is 4-1 5-1 with a 2.87 ERA lifetime against the Orioles, which is his best record against any team. The Orioles also haven't fared well against the Brewers bullpen, netting 10 hits in 16 1/3 innings. The bullpen has a 2.20 ERA against Baltimore.

For the Orioles, Mark Williamson (3-0, 3.86) makes his second start. In his first start last weekend after 26 relief appearances this season, he pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs and seven hits against Toronto.
