Officer Gregory W. Overstreet, the Anne Arundel County policeman accused of trying to extort $500 from a man in Queenstown Park on July 20, was suspended without pay Tuesday after being arrested and released on his own recognizance, officials said.

Officer Overstreet, 31, surrendered at the Southern District at 11 a.m. and was taken to a court commissioner in Annapolis.

At the same time, a departmental hearing to determine Officer Overstreet's status was being held at police headquarters in Millersville, said police spokesman Officer Bell.

The hearing resulted in Officer Overstreet being suspended without pay.

The suspension without pay is for an "indeterminate" amount of time, said Chief Robert Russell.

The suspension will probably last at least as long as it takes for the trial to be concluded, he explained.
