NationsBank plans to close 24 branches

THE BALTIMORE SUN

NationsBank Corp. plans to close 24 branches of its bank subsidiaries in the Baltimore and Washington areas, according to a notice it filed with federal regulators.

The Charlotte-based company, which last year bought MNC Financial Inc., is in the midst of a year-long consolidation that has cost about 1,000 jobs and has seen more than a dozen branches close so far.

The latest notice, published by the federal Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, lists two dozen more branches that NationsBank plans to close in the coming months.

Most of the branches are in Washington, D.C., Prince George's and Montgomery counties. The others are in Frederick, Harford and Charles counties. The branch at the corner of Baltimore and Charles streets in downtown Baltimore also is due to be closed.

The affected branches are a mix of Maryland National, American Security and NationsBank branches.

NationsBank spokesman Daniel G. Finney said the company has not announced the closings publicly "because we didn't want to see misuse of the information by our competitors." Customers have been notified directly, he said.

The latest list brings to nearly 40 the number of branches closed or slated for closing. Before the merger was announced, the two companies had about 320 branches in the Baltimore-Washington area. The consolidation with MNC is expected to be finished by the end of this year.
