A night of tough guys and tough gals

On cable, the movie that made Arnold Schwarzenegger's career competes directly with one that almost derailed it. On broadcast TV, Fox breaks the rerun monotony with season premieres of two of its reality shows.

* "NFL Football" (noon-3:30 p.m., WJZ, Channel 13) -- It seems almost unnatural to think about football in July, but today's the day that the San Diego Chargers and Atlanta Falcons suit up in the annual Hall of Fame exhibition game. ABC.

* "Danielle Steel's 'Palomino' " (8 p.m.-10 p.m., WMAR, Channel 2) -- As TV horses go, "Palomino" is really lame. Lee Horsley and Lindsay Frost star in this 1991 made-for-TV movie, which hasn't exactly improved with age. NBC repeat.

* "COPS." (8 p.m.-9 p.m., WBFF, Channel 45) -- The first half of this double feature marks the seventh-season premiere of "COPS," which begins by following Los Angeles police officers on a particularly harrowing evening. Just what we need on TV these days: more screen time for the LAPD. Fox.

* "America's Most Wanted" (9 p.m.-9:30 p.m., WBFF, Channel 45) -- The "COPS" theme song, which begins with the line "Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do?" would have to be altered to fit tonight's "America's Most Wanted." But not by much, because it would be enough to sing, "Bad girls, bad girls, whatcha gonna do?" This eighth-season opener devotes itself exclusively to female criminals. Fox.

* "The Last Action Hero" (8 p.m.-10:15 p.m., HBO) -- Maybe this 1993 Schwarzenegger movie will draw more viewers on cable than it did in the theaters. It could hardly do worse.

* "The Terminator" (8 p.m.-10 p.m., USA) -- This 1984 movie, on the other hand, is a time-travel thriller with timeless appeal. In this film, Mr. Schwarzenegger was more like "The Best Action Villain."
