The Rev. Paul J. Dougherty, pastor emeritus of St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church in Baltimore, died Wednesday at Stella Maris Hospice of complications after surgery. He was 90.

Father Dougherty retired in 1967 after serving as pastor of the Hampden area church since 1959. Earlier, he had been pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Brunswick, Frederick County, since 1946. After his retirement, he produced periodic newsletters, dealing with his life and his devotion to the Virgin Mary, and sent them to priests and others.

The native of Delta, Pa., was reared on a farm near the Mason-Dixon Line. Among his six brothers and sisters were a Sulpician priest, a Carmelite nun and a Sister of St. Joseph.

A graduate of St. Charles College in Catonsville and of St. Mary's Seminary, he was ordained in 1930 at the Basilica of the Assumption in Baltimore.

His first assignment was to Holy Name Roman Catholic Church in Washington, where he spent 16 years as an associate pastor.

A Mass of Christian burial was to be offered at 11 a.m. today at Stella Maris, 2300 Dulaney Valley Road, Timonium.

His survivors include seven nieces and nephews.
