Jobless claims drop 59,000

Workers returning from summer furloughs in the auto and textile industries helped push down first-time claims for state unemployment benefits to their lowest level in four months, the government reported yesterday.

The Labor Department said initial claims dropped 59,000 in the week that ended July 23.
