Baltimore County police returned to Security Square Mall yesterday to search for a 3-year-old girl reported missing Wednesday night when her mother was shopping at the Montgomery Ward store.
Police said Darntrell Griffin, 21, of the 900 block of Homestead St., told them she was shopping in the appliances section with her boyfriend around 7:30 p.m. when she noticed her daughter, Shante Denise Harris, was missing.
"We haven't found anybody yet who saw the child," said E. Jay Miller, police spokesman. "Hopefully, she's safe."
Mr. Miller said police planned to question the child's father, who is in the Baltimore City Detention Center, for possible leads. Police do not think the disappearance is domestic kidnapping, the spokesman said.
Ms. Griffin told police Shante was wearing a black and white polka dot top, pink sweat pants, black, red and white sneakers and had white clips in her hair.
Officer Arthur Erdman, of the Woodlawn Precinct, said that after the Montgomery Ward store was searched, mall security contacted the managers of each of the more than 100 stores at the mall and asked them to reopen their stores so they could be searched.
Anyone knowing the whereabouts of the child is asked to call the Woodlawn Precinct at 887-1340.
