Two people were killed and two others seriously injured last night when a speeding car slammed into the back of another car and a pickup truck on a Southeast Baltimore street, causing the truck to flip over on its roof, police said.
The accident occurred about 7:30 p.m. when a Mercury Merkur that witnesses said was traveling at high speed struck the back of another car in the westbound lane of O'Donnell Street, just east of Ponca Street, police reported. The Merkur then struck the back of a pickup truck that was heading west, and the truck overturned, police said.
Both occupants of Merkur were killed, and the two men in the truck were taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center with serious injuries, police said.
Police said the driver of the other car had minor injuries.
Anthony Shoja, who drove by moments after the accident, said the force of the collision sent the driver of the Merkur through the windshield.
"He was just lying in the middle of the road," Mr. Shoja said. "From what the police told me, he was going at least 90 mph when he hit the car."
Police did not release the identities of the victims. They said it was unclear why the Merkur was traveling so fast and that they were continuing their investigation late last night.
About 25 people stood around the accident scene, which was strewn with debris from the vehicles, including a door and a seat from the truck that were lying in the road.
