Girl, 3, missing from shopping mall

Baltimore County police were searching today for a 3-year-old girl reported missing last night when her mother was shopping at the Montgomery Ward store in Security Square Mall.

Police said Darntrell Griffin, 21, of the 900 block of Homestead St., was shopping in the store's appliances section with her boyfriend around 7:30 p.m. when she suddenly noticed her daughter, Shante Denise Harris, was missing.

When last seen, the child was wearing a black and white polka dot top, pink sweat pants, black, red and white tennis shoes and had white clips in her hair.

L After searching for the child, the couple notified store employees and mall security, who called the county police.

Officer Arthur Erdman, of the Woodlawn Precinct, said by the time the Montgomery Ward store was thoroughly searched and its customers and employees quizzed, the mall had closed.

He said mall security contacted the managers of each of the more than 100 stores at the mall and asked them to reopen their stores so they could be searched.

In the meantime, specially trained fire department dogs were called in.

Officer Erdman said at least 20 police officers and mall security personnel participated in the search until well after midnight.

Anyone knowing the whereabouts of the child is urged to call the Woodlawn Precinct at 887-1340.
