The defense in a Woodlawn woman's lawsuit against two Springfield Hospital Center police officers is expected to present its case in Carroll Circuit Court today.
Ida Hawkins, 54, a nursing assistant at the state mental hospital, is seeking $5 million in the suit against Officers Ricky Hinkle and John Craven. She claims the officers were racist and abusive when she was stopped for two traffic violations.
The civil jury trial began Monday. Most of Mrs. Hawkins' case was to have been concluded by this morning.
The two officers are expected to testify today along with several other officers who witnessed the June 27, 1990, incident involving Mrs. Hawkins.
Most of yesterday's testimony was from two psychiatrists, who said Mrs. Hawkins suffered post-traumatic stress syndrome from the incident.
The officers, who are white, have said Mrs. Hawkins, who is black, was not treated unfairly or in a racist manner when Officer Hinkle stopped her car as she was going to work.
