Divisional races and work stoppages or not, runners will get their crack at a pennant run next month.
It won't matter particularly if the Major League Baseball Players Association is involved in a work stoppage.
New on the calendar for racing enthusiasts and more casual runners -- and at a tolerable summertime distance -- is the Pennant Race 5K.
The Aug. 13 race, which has an 8 a.m. start, will begin and finish at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It is being presented by Tim Bishop, Orioles strength and conditioning coach, and will benefit Baltimore City Special Olympics, a division of the Maryland Special Olympics.
"Frank Kolarek -- the guy who is the development coordinator for the Maryland Special Olympics -- is a former minor-league baseball player who pitches batting practice for the Orioles," says Pennant Race director Dave Cooley. "He was looking for a fund-raiser and got together with Tim Bishop and they put this event together.
"We got permission from the Orioles to put on the event even though they have a game that evening."
Says Kolarek, a former catcher in the Oakland Athletics' organization: "I got a sniff at big-league camp twice. Just to date myself, Billy Martin was my manager. Some of the contacts I made through the game have helped me with the Special Olympics."
Entry fee is $12 until Aug. 6, after which it will be $15. Registrants will receive T-shirts, and refreshments and random awards will be part of the awards presentation.
"One of the random giveaways includes tickets to the Orioles games," says Cooley. "I think we have at least six for that evening game and tickets for other games as well."
A 1K fun walk/run will begin after the 5K. For information, call Cooley at (410) 377-8882.
